Course Aims and Objectives
|
The BSc (Hons) in Construction Management focuses on the industry's role as a key provider of future economic and social development. It investigates the product and processes of construction, and the way they are provided within an economic, contractual and regulated world.This requires the development of human and technical skills in order to produce the ability to get projects delivered with tight time and budget constraints as well as an appreciation of the social and economic context of the industry as a whole.

Module Structure
|
This 15 months top up programme is composed of 6 modules, each carries 15 credits plus an Honours Research Project which carries 30 credits. All modules are assessed by coursework unless otherwise stated. The modules have been developed to deliver the stated aims of the programme:
1. Inter-professional Project 2. Construction Economics (assessed by coursework & exam) 3. Contract Practice 4. Bid Strategy 5. Project Management 6. Civil Engineering 7. Honours Research Project * All modules and research project are assessed by coursework unless otherwise stated. All coursework and examination papers will be prepared and marked by local teaching staffs.

Module Description
|
1. Inter-professional Project (15 credits) The module brings together the different but related disciplines across the School in a live practice setting and thus affords students an opportunity to apply their profession-specific expertise and interpersonal competencies to a live project for a client. 2. Construction Economics (15 credits) The module aims to develop and enhance the student's knowledge and understanding of the application and thinking on construction economics in relation to both new and existing building projects through a range of related topic areas from costing and design issues through to value engineering and taxation/grant applications. 3. Contract Practice (15 credits) The module aims to provide students an appreciation and understanding of Contract Practice primarily focusing on standard forms of building and civil engineering contracts, their principal procedures, commercial and operational issues in ensuring the successful delivery of a construction project. 4. Bid Strategy (15 credits) The aim of this module is for students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding in providing solutions to a real problem. A curriculum that encourages students to seek solutions through problem based learning. Appreciation of construction technology and innovation. The ability to synthesize complex information and communicate effectively. Knowledge and ability to work in teams and lead teams including the aptitude to work independently. 5. Project Management (15 credits) This module focuses on project management and aspect of construction considering people, process and technology. It provide students with an overall understanding of construction scheduling, programming, earned value analysis and cash flow, risk and value management, people management, project culture and leadership, etc. which relates to aim of the module. 6. Civil Engineering (15 credits) The module aims to enable students to use problem-based learning to understand the Technology of Civil Engineering as applied to Construction Managers and innovations now being applied. This will encourage them to interpret information about project sites and encourage a wider understanding of operational and constructional processes. They will also be encouraged to synthesise knowledge and work independently to develop solutions. 7. Honours Research Project (30 credits) The double module aims to develop and enhance the requisite intellectual, practical and transferable skills necessary for graduates to enter relevant professional practice. Able to apply academic theory in context, respond to the opportunities and challenges of the evolving technological economic, social and environmental demands within which Built Environment professionals and organization operate.

Entry Requirements
|
1. Higher Diploma, Associate Degree or Professional Diploma in Building Studies, Quantity Surveying, Building Surveying, Construction Management, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Real Estate Management and the like.
2. Other relevant qualifications with substantial work experience will be considered on a case to case basis and at the discretion of Birmingham City University. Students are expected to attend two evening classes per week (from 7:00pm to 10:00pm) for each semester. The time schedule is tentative, course modules and fees are subject to change without prior notice. Application Form
