Course Aims and Objectives |
The aims of this programme are to: - facilitate students’ montre development of a systematic understanding of the knowledge and a critical awareness of the montre problems, issues and opportunities for the management of construction projects; - improve students’ awareness and appreciation of the conflicting interests within construction projects and the political, social, cultural, economic, technological, environmental, legal and organisational factors involved;
- develop students’ problem-solving skills and inter-personal and communication skills and other competences. -->HKIS-->RICS
Graduates of MSc Construction Project Management can apply for the Probationer Membership of The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS) The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers (HKICM) The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) The Hong Kong Institute of Clerk of Works (HKICW) Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE)

Module Structure |
There are eight taught Level 7 modules with 15 credits each and one dissertation worth 60 credits in this programme (to be completed in 24 months or shorter with module exemption). The final award of the Master’s degree follows successful completion of a dissertation.

Module Description

1. Construction Law and Contract - Credit value: 15
Assessment weightings: 100% Exam
The module considers the legal and contractual aspect which influence the way that construction projects are managed.
2. International Construction - Credit value: 15
Assessment weightings: Group presentation 40%, Essay 60%
The aim of the module is to help you develop a systematic understanding and a critical awareness of the problems, issues and opportunities for the construction industry in a national and global economy.
3. Sustainable Construction - Credit value: 15
Assessment weightings: 100% coursework
This module discusses the reality of construction activities which have a long-lasting effect on the environment therefore sustainable and environmentally sound construction methods and innovative management practices are needed.
4. Business Management - Credit value: 15
Assessment weightings: 100% coursework
This module seeks to provide students the opportunity to examine and critically analyse topical business issues in construction organizational context.
5. People and Organisation - Credit value: 15
Assessment weightings: 100% coursework
This module addresses the heart of any commercial enterprise; namely, the social functioning of groups and individuals in a collaborative project. It seeks to explore organisation and management as human social phenomena to enable people to work together more effectively.
6. Innovation in Construction - Credit value: 15
Assessment weightings:
20% of final mark comes from the presentation
80% of final mark comes from the coursework
The module will consider change as an innovation process. It will consider critically past examples from construction project procurement at personal, team, project and organisational levels; supply chain management; contracts; the management of risk; and the application of strategic approaches to meet the needs of clients, stakeholders and users.
7. Project Management Methods - Credit value: 15
Assessment weightings: 100% Portfolio
This module explores methods of Project Management within the context of construction. It explores the practical aspects of the development and construction process and in particular, those areas over which a Project Manager would expect to have some control.
8. Critical Evaluation of Practice - Credit value: 15
Assessment weightings: Presentation 30%, Written Essay 70%
This module seeks to develop students into critical thinkers about the construction industry and its practices to enable them to cope with the complex, uncertain dynamic world and to be change agents in this.
9. Dissertation - Credit value: 60
Assessment weightings: 100% by individual coursework
The aim of the dissertation is to develop your skills of carrying out research into a practice based problem and your ability to theorise and conceptualise. It also aims to encourage you to make connections between theory and practice.
